CHELMSFORD Chieftains won a thrilling encounter against Slough Jets to maintain their perfect start to the National Ice Hockey League South 2.

Trailing at the end of the first period, the game was tied heading into the final seven minutes of the encounter.

But James Ayling struck with just 60 seconds remaining to hand the Chieftains a 7-6 win.

And coach Joe Wilson said he was hugely impressed with his team’s determination.

“I couldn’t of asked any more from the boys,” said coach Wilson.

“They showed great character coming from behind to grind out a massive win.

“We knew tonight would be tough and it proved that, all three lines worked extremely hard tonight and the game sheet shows that, with goals coming from several different players.

“Once again energy from the fans helped spur us on throughout the game.”

Courtney Grant (two), Bradley Moore (two), Charlie Phillips and Ross Brears scored for the Chieftains before Ayling had the final say.

The league’s top dogs Chieftains return to home ice on Sunday and face Raiders Junior S2 at 6.30pm.
