ALL major structural work on the new Riverside leisure centre has been completed – marking a major milestone in the project.
The new leisure centre will house a main 25mx10 lane swimming pool with moveable floors, a boom to sub-divide the pool as required and capacity for 300 spectators.
With the structure of the complex now in place, internal fittings are now under way.
The new complex will also include health and fitness studios, a 120-station gym, a soft play area and creche, changing rooms and a more spacious river frontage cafe/restaurant. All the facilities are being designed to ensure easy access for people with disabilities.
Key features of the design include a spacious and welcoming reception foyer, new ice rink support accommodation and innovative first floor walkways which will link the new building to the existing sports hall and ice rink.
Councillor Julia Jeapes said: “I have been excited about our fantastic new flagship leisure centre ever since I saw the designs in August 2016. Work is going very well and now that the structure is springing up, you can really imagine how it will look when it is complete, packed with swimmers and other users enjoying their activities. I can’t wait for the new Riverside to open for everyone to enjoy next year.”
Ian Gifford, Operations Director for Kier Construction Eastern, comments: “We are delighted to be working collaboratively with Chelmsford City Council to deliver this exciting complex project. The new Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre will provide fantastic amenities for the local community.”
